Photography has enhanced my observation skills and certainly given me a greater appreciation for beauty - whether it's in the way a couple in love look at each other or it's nature's backdrop behind them. I was able to enjoy both on a recent engagement photo shoot with Isela and Jorge when they invited me to visit the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island, east of Poulsbo, Washington. This was the beautiful location where Jorge first proposed to Isela last fall.
The Bloedel Reserve is a unique, world-renowned public garden. The founder, Prentice Bloedel, was the son of a prominent lumber company owner. In the late 1920's he was called upon by his father to take over the family timber business. During his tenure as head of the business, he became a pioneer in renewable resources and sustainability. He was the first to use sawdust as a fuel to power his company's mills. He replanted clear cut areas, and started a company that marketed fireplace logs made from sawdust. He took early retirement from the company to devote the rest of his life to the creation of these gardens.
Prentice Bloedel was deeply interested in the relationship between people and the natural world, and the power of landscape to evoke emotions ranging from tranquility to exhilaration. He created a place that "provides refreshment and tranquility in the presence of natural beauty." As a side note, my step-daughter, Summer Haverly Hutton, is the household manager for Prentice Bloedel's daughter, Virginia Bloedel Wright. Virginia is carrying on her father's legacy with projects of her own.
Although we only had time to see a portion of this incredible 150 acre reserve during the photo shoot, what we saw was certainly worth another visit and the opportunity to see more. Visit www.BonnieKingPhotography.com to see more of Isela and Jorge and the Bloedel Reserve.
